Yes, vehicles manufactured in China can be registered in Poland.
But there is an important distinction that every importer should understand before purchasing or shipping a vehicle:
A vehicle manufactured in China is not necessarily a Chinese-market vehicle.
Many vehicles manufactured in China are produced specifically for the European Union and already have the European approval documentation required for their intended market.
A vehicle produced for the Chinese domestic market, however, may have a completely different approval status, technical specification and document set.
That difference can determine whether registration in Poland is straightforward, requires additional technical work, or needs an individual approval procedure.
For importers, the correct question is therefore not:
“Can Chinese cars be registered in Poland?”
The correct question is:
“Can this exact VIN and Chinese-market specification be registered in Poland with the documents that will be supplied?”
For an importer, the safest moment to determine the Polish registration route is before the vehicle leaves China.
Not after customs clearance.
Not after the vehicle reaches a warehouse in Poland.
And definitely not after an entire batch has already been purchased.
Before shipment, we recommend checking at least:
With a larger order, one documentation problem repeated across the whole batch can become significantly more expensive than checking representative files in advance.
This distinction is fundamental.
A vehicle may be manufactured in China and still be fully intended for the EU market.
Such a vehicle may already have:
That is a completely different situation from buying the same or similar model directly from the Chinese domestic market.
If a vehicle was manufactured for Europe and has the appropriate EU approval documentation, its Chinese place of manufacture is not, by itself, the problem.
The focus shifts to the normal registration, import, ownership and tax documentation.
A vehicle built for the Chinese domestic market may not have EU CoC or EU type approval for that particular version.
It may also have technical data and documentation prepared only for Chinese authorities.
That does not automatically mean the vehicle cannot be registered in Poland.
But the registration route needs to be determined individually.
Potentially yes.
Polish vehicle-registration rules do not provide one universal route called “Chinese vehicle registration.”
Instead, the registration authority looks at the legal and technical status of the particular vehicle.
Depending on the case, registration documentation can involve a Certificate of Conformity or an appropriate individual approval document where required. Polish law expressly recognises, among other documents, national and EU individual vehicle approvals as possible approval-related documents for registration.
This means the absence of EU CoC does not automatically answer the registration question.
The vehicle must first be analysed.
This can completely change the procedure.
A brand-new vehicle that:
requires particular caution.
TDT states that a new vehicle without EU type approval may be subject to national individual vehicle approval. The approval is issued by the Director of Transportowy Dozór Techniczny following the relevant technical procedure.
For an importer, this means that buying a new Chinese domestic-market vehicle without first checking its homologation status can create a very different project from importing an ordinary EU-approved vehicle.
A vehicle that has already been officially registered in China presents a different documentation situation.
For an imported vehicle that was previously registered, Polish registration rules require the foreign registration document. For a vehicle from a non-EU country, another official document confirming registration issued by the competent foreign authority can also be relevant under the applicable registration procedure.
The fact that a vehicle was previously registered abroad can therefore be very important.
But it does not remove the need to check:
Importers should not assume that mileage alone decides whether the vehicle is treated as new or used for the registration route.
What matters for registration analysis is also whether the vehicle has actually been registered before and what official documentation proves that status.
A vehicle with a few hundred kilometres but no previous registration can present a completely different approval problem from a vehicle that has already been legally registered in its country of origin.
This should be established before the purchase contract is signed.
The Certificate of Conformity (CoC) confirms that a particular vehicle conforms to an approved vehicle type.
For an EU-market vehicle, it contains technical and approval information used during registration.
Typical information includes:
For an importer, the important point is that a document supplied by a Chinese manufacturer called:
“certificate”,“factory certificate”,“technical certificate”,“vehicle conformity document”
is not automatically an EU Certificate of Conformity.
The actual approval status must be verified.
This is one of the first things we would verify.
If a supplier says:
“The vehicle has COC.”
ask for the document before paying for the vehicles.
Then verify:
The word CoC in an email from a supplier is not enough.
Missing EU CoC does not automatically mean:
“Impossible to register.”
But it also does not mean:
“Just do a Polish technical inspection.”
The next step is to determine the actual approval status of the vehicle.
Possible outcomes include:
The correct answer depends on the exact vehicle.
For a new vehicle without EU type approval, individual approval can become central to the registration process.
TDT explains that national individual approval applies to a new vehicle which did not obtain EU type approval before being placed on the Polish market, as well as certain vehicles modified before first registration in a way affecting the approval basis.
The Director of TDT issues national or EU individual approval by administrative decision. Polish homologation law requires a test report confirming compliance with the relevant technical requirements.
Individual approval is not simply an application sent to TDT with photographs of the vehicle.
There is a technical stage first.
Polish homologation law provides that the examination confirming compliance with the relevant technical requirements is carried out by a technical service. That technical service prepares a test report which is then part of the application for individual approval.
The simplified sequence is:
vehicle analysis → technical service → tests → test report → TDT → individual approval → registration
This is why it is important to determine whether this route will be necessary before importing a large quantity of vehicles.
This distinction is critical.
A Polish technical inspection is part of many imported-vehicle registration files.
But a positive result from an ordinary inspection does not automatically replace approval documentation when separate approval documentation is legally required.
The registration rules list technical inspection evidence and homologation / individual approval documents separately.
For Chinese-market vehicles, therefore, do not assume:
positive inspection = registration guaranteed
The entire registration file needs to be considered.
A Chinese-market vehicle may be technically very similar to its European version.
Or it may not.
Before committing to an import, it is worth checking whether the exact specification corresponds with the requirements applicable to the planned Polish registration route.
Depending on the vehicle, technical verification can include areas such as:
The required scope depends on the vehicle category and approval route.
Do not assume that because the European version of the same model exists, the Chinese domestic-market version is technically identical.
This is particularly important with Chinese manufacturers.
A manufacturer can sell a model in Europe and also sell a vehicle with the same commercial name in China.
The vehicles may differ in:
For registration purposes, a familiar model name is not enough.
The VIN and exact specification matter.
An electric powertrain does not eliminate registration-document requirements.
For a Chinese-market EV, an importer should still establish:
An EV can be technically modern and still have a documentation problem in Poland.
These are separate questions.
Not every issue affecting a Chinese-market vehicle is strictly a registration issue.
For example, an importer may also want to verify:
Those factors may not determine whether a Polish registration authority accepts the file, but they can determine whether the vehicle is commercially viable after registration.
For an importer, both questions matter:
Can we register it?
and
Can we realistically operate, service and sell it in Poland?
Before the vehicle leaves China, obtain as much original documentation as possible.
Depending on the case, this can include:
For previously registered vehicles, the registration document is particularly important because Polish registration rules require evidence of previous registration for a used imported vehicle.
Documents submitted to Polish authorities generally need to be understandable within the Polish registration procedure.
Foreign-language registration and ownership documents may require sworn translation into Polish depending on the document and applicable exception.
For documentation issued in China, importers should assume early in the project that translations and document interpretation will need to be organised rather than leaving this until the registration appointment.
China is outside the European Union.
For a vehicle imported directly from China and registered in Poland for the first time, the Polish registration file requires proof of import customs clearance.
This is separate from the question of homologation.
A vehicle can be:
properly purchased + properly customs-cleared + still not yet ready for registration
if the approval or technical documentation is incomplete.
That distinction is important for importers.
This deserves its own rule:
Customs clearance means the vehicle has passed the customs procedure. It does not mean the vehicle has automatically been approved for road registration in Poland.
Before shipping a Chinese vehicle, analyse both:
customs routeandregistration / approval route
They solve different problems.
For a serious commercial import, we recommend asking the supplier for documents before the final purchase decision.
Ask for:
If the supplier cannot provide basic registration documentation before shipment, that itself is useful information.
This is where the service becomes especially valuable for B2B clients.
Suppose an importer intends to order 20 vehicles.
Do not begin by analysing all 20.
Start with:
1–2 representative VINs + complete sample document files.
Then check:
Vehicle status → documentation → EU approval → technical specification → potential Polish registration route
If the documentation is structurally correct, the process can then be expanded to the remaining vehicles.
If it is not, the problem is discovered before 20 vehicles are sitting in Poland.
For one private customer, an incomplete registration file is an inconvenience.
For an importer, it can become an inventory problem.
If 50 vehicles arrive with the same missing approval document, the importer may face:
That is why a pre-shipment registration review is not just an administrative service.
It is import-risk management.
Professional importers need a repeatable process rather than an answer for one VIN.
A useful workflow is:
supplier documents → representative VIN check → registration-route analysis → shipment decision → customs → technical procedure → registration → customer handover
For larger projects, vehicles can then be tracked individually by VIN.
The registration status of the vehicle and the corporate structure of the owner are separate questions.
A foreign company importing Chinese vehicles to Poland may also need to determine:
But none of these corporate arrangements removes the need for the vehicle itself to satisfy the applicable registration and approval requirements.
That is useful information but not proof.
The Chinese domestic version may have a different approval status.
Ask for the actual document.
Then verify it.
Once the vehicle is in Poland, your negotiating position with the foreign supplier is much weaker.
Customs and vehicle approval are separate procedures.
A new vehicle without EU type approval may require individual approval.
The documents serve different functions in the registration procedure.
For commercial imports, this is the mistake we would most strongly avoid.
For a Chinese-market vehicle, we recommend the following sequence.
Check:
Ask for evidence.
Do not rely only on mileage or the seller's wording.
Check:
Determine whether an EU-approved specification exists for the exact vehicle and whether the supplied CoC is genuinely applicable.
Determine whether the vehicle may require further technical verification or modification.
Decide whether the case appears suitable for standard registration or whether a technical-service / individual-approval route should be considered.
For commercial batches, repeat the verification across representative vehicle variants.
AkcyzaWarszawa handles imported vehicle documentation, excise and registrations in Poland for both private and business customers.
Our work includes more complex vehicles and cases involving:
We handle more than 2,000 vehicle excise cases and approximately 1,000–1,200 vehicle registrations annually.
For Chinese imports, our preferred approach is simple:
check the documentation before the vehicles are shipped.
For an initial assessment, send:
For a larger batch, start with representative files.
We can then determine what should be checked before committing to the full shipment.
Yes. The fact that a vehicle was manufactured in China does not prevent registration in Poland.
The important issues are its market specification, documents, previous registration status, technical compliance and approval status.
Potentially yes, but it requires case-by-case verification.
A Chinese domestic-market vehicle may not have the same EU approval documents as a version officially sold in Europe.
Where a standard EU approval route applies, CoC can be important.
Polish law also recognises appropriate individual approval documents where required, so missing CoC does not automatically mean registration is impossible.
Potentially, but this is precisely the type of vehicle that should be checked before shipment.
TDT confirms that a new vehicle without EU type approval can be subject to individual vehicle approval.
Not automatically.
The actual document and approval reference need to be checked.
Not necessarily.
Technical inspection and homologation / individual approval are separate elements under Polish registration rules.
National and EU individual vehicle approvals are issued by the Director of Transportowy Dozór Techniczny (TDT).
The relevant tests are performed by a designated technical service, which prepares the test report used in the TDT procedure.
If the vehicle was previously registered, the Polish registration procedure requires the foreign registration document or, in certain non-EU cases, another official document confirming its registration.
No.
Proof of customs clearance is required for a vehicle imported from outside the EU and registered in Poland for the first time, but customs clearance does not replace technical or approval requirements.
Yes.
In many cases, an initial registration-risk assessment can be made from the VIN, registration / ownership documents, technical data and available approval documentation.
Yes, but we normally recommend starting with representative VINs and document sets before analysing every vehicle.
Before you place the order, check whether the vehicles can follow a realistic registration route in Poland.
Send:
For a commercial order, it is usually much cheaper to identify a registration problem before shipment than after the full batch arrives in Poland.
